Day 3 in Ethiopia

Each day is so full of emotions and new experiences. Today we spent 6 hours on a crowded bus and saw the beautiful countryside of Ethiopia. What a gorgeous country! Our desitination was to meet the birth families. It was a life changing experience; completely heart stretching! I reserve the details which are too intimate. We will share the details with Melkamu when he is older. There were lots of tears from everyone.

We did not see our son today, but we did yesterday. He was more subdued and seemed to have a small fever. He was sitting on my lap a lot. We saw him over lunchtime and he sat in my lap and sang a very sweet song to himself. The nannies asked him to give us kisses and hugs. He is encouraged to be loving and kind and it already seems to be his nature. During lunch other boys tried to hug Jim and Melkamu (his name here) pushed them away; already claiming his Aba ba. He calls me Ema Ma which sounds like sweetness to my ears. :)

Tomorrow we have our children for half a day! We are so excited to be together again. This is the first time we take him out of the orphanage and bring him to our guest house. I hope he is feeling better.

Take care, everyone and know that we miss you!

  1. That must have been rough to meet his birth mother. But also really good that you did it--so she can rest a little easier knowing that that Melkamu is getting 2 wonderful parents.
Oh, we had a good time watching ESPN2 at your house on Fri and hanging out with the kitties (well, mostly Rebel). I told the cats they better get ready for the new bundle of energy coming to Pine St! We can't wait to see you, but enjoy your time in Ethiopia!

  2. Hello Linda,

I came across your blog after a google search of such blogs because I was looking for people who have interest in living/travelling to Ethiopia.
I am trying to connect all such people through a forum I recently set up (http://www.expatethiopia.com)so that it would be easier for all foreigners to easily access information about travelling to or living in Ethiopia.

I wish you could register at our forum and also invite others you know to help us expand the community. I also wish you can post at any section of the forum once registered and leave a link to your blog at the end of your post so other people can find you if they want to know more about you or your experiences in Ethiopia.

Thanks for the help and look forward to have you as a member!

  3. Are you taking lots of pictures of his homeland to show him when he gets a little older? It's a bittersweet time that you spent with the mother.
We're praying that you have a safe and happy trip home. We're so excited to meet him! See you soon. Keep us informed. Love you.
